Thornthwaite is a traditional Lakeland family run farm, set amidst the beautiful scenery of the Woodland Valley, known as one of the "Three Jewels of Lakeland" immortalised by Wordsworth, located in the Southern Fells of the Lake District in Cumbria.

Established in 1968, we have four self-catering holiday cottages sleeping between 2 and 6 people, including our 4 Star Gold Award barn conversion with stunning views of the Lake District fells, and two hand crafted Log Cabins, with views across the valley and ancient woodland.The self-catering holiday cottages are a home from home, and come with everything you will need to make your stay in the Lake District an enjoyable one.

The Holiday Cottages and Log Cabins are available for short breaks or longer throughout the year. Thornthwaite is ideally situated for those wishing to go walking, cycling or just relaxing, with many walks and cycle routes from your cottage door including the Lakes & Dales Loop and the Bay Cycle Way, and for those who enjoy fishing we also have our own trout fishing lake.

Nestling at the foot of the Southern Fells our comfortable Gold Award Lake District holiday cottages offer a high standard of self-catering accommodation and are open all year.
The cottages can sleep from 2 to 6 people.
All are centrally heated and two of the cottages have woodburning fires for those cosy winter evenings.
Our self-catering cottages can be rented for a week or more from Friday to Friday.
Additionally, short breaks are offered all year round.
The cottages and log cabin are fully equipped with everything you will need to make your stay a pleasant one (specific details can be found on the individual cottage page).
Stable Cottage was originally the stable for the estates heavy horses, used whilst they where being re-shod in the adjacent blacksmiths workshop.
Stable Cottage has been awarded the VisitEngland Gold Award for exceptional quality of accommodation and customer service.
Stable Cottage has an open plan lounge and kitchen/dining area.
There is a solid oak fitted kitchen with dishwasher, electric oven with halogen hob and microwave.
All crockery and cutlery is included.
The cottage has solid oak flooring with under floor heating, and quality lounge and dining furniture.
This holiday cottage was once the Blacksmiths workshop, where until recently the forge remained.
It is a sturdy building typical of the style of many in the Lake District, made of the local Burlington and Coniston slate.
There are excellent panoramic views from the cottage of the Old Man of Coniston and the surrounding fells, Dow Crag, Walna Scar and Swirl How.

The Woodmans holiday cottage was once the heart of the estates forestry operations, and was used to store trees felled on the farm.
This large cottage has now been sympathetically converted into comfortable holiday accommodation for up to six people.

We have two Log Cabins, the larger Larch Log Cabin is fully equipped and offers more space.
The Cosy Glamping Cabin as its name suggests offers a simpler 'glamping' experience, but with a wonderful veranda to take in the views.

The two Log Cabins are sited in the old orchard surrounded by pasture and woodland and are in a relaxing rural setting, yet are within easy driving distance of the popular tourist centres of the Lakes District.
