Welcome to Callumkill, an estate situated at the South Eastern corner of the Isle of Islay, the southern-most isle of the Inner Hebrides. Callumkill Farmhouse is more than 200 years old. It is located high on a ridge of hills, overlooking fallow deer grazing in the fields, the pagodas of both Ardbeg and Lagavulin distilleries, and the Atlantic Ocean.

On a clear day the skyline of Ireland appears on the southern horizon and to the east the island of Arran as well as the Mull of Kintyre are visible. Only a few hundred meters from the farmhouse, you can find Ardbeg Cottage. This cosy self-catering cottage, too, offers its visitors great views and plenty of privacy. The setting of both houses is tranquil and remote, yet the village of Port Ellen is only three miles away.

There you'll find restaurants, supermarkets and some small shops which provide residents and tourists with coffees, teas, good food and everything to feel 'home from home'. In addition to that three Islay distilleries Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig, famous for their full flavoured peaty whiskies, are within walking distance.
Services
Callumkill means Keill (chapel) of St Columba.
St Columba was an Irish saint who left Ireland in AD 563 and settled in Iona - this became the centre of the Columban church until 814AD when it moved to Kells.
Abbots of Iona held supremacy over all the Columban monasteries in Ireland and Scotland.
The carving and writing generating from this group is distinctive and there are many examples of it on Islay, including for example the Kildalton cross just up the road from Callumkill.
The Chapel of Callumkill is gone now, and Callumkill Farmhouse is built on its ruin and apparently using some the stones from the ruined church.
Callumkill Farmhouse was built about 200 years ago on the site, and using the stones, of a church.
The estate's name "Callumkill" stems from the old irish language: Colum Cille = Church Dove.
The name refers to St. Columban of Iona, a famous abbot and missionary who lived in 6th century.
We have sympathetically renovated the house to a very high standard retaining original features, like butler's bells and flagstones, but adding modern comforts.
It is built on top of a ridge with breathtaking views over fields with fallow deer, the pagodas of Lagavulin and the sea.
This was the Shepherd's cottage in former times.
Some years ago we have turned this little bungalow into a cosy holiday accommodation.
This house is ideal for a family, a couple and hunters.
It is located in a secluded setting offering a lot of privacy and wonderful views out to the sea.
Like the Callumkill Farmhouse our Ardbeg Cottage offers guests a high level of privacy and a perfect base for touring Islay.
Callumkill offers red deer and fallow deer stalking as well as walked-up and driven shooting of woodcock, pheasant and snipe over pointers.
Islay's red deer are one of the few remaining herds of pure red deer.
Donald MacNeill, Callumkill's game keeper, was born and bred on Islay and has worked on Callumkill since 1993.
He knows every inch of the ground and will guide you to the best locations for your day of sport as well as fill you in on the terrain, history and wildlife.
A relation of about 3.000 inhabitants and 5.000 red deer shows that deer are a substantial part of Islay.
The stalking of a red deer is a thrilling and challenging experience and Islay has one of the few remaining herds of pure red deer.
The hunting day starts around 09:30h.
Donnie will knock on your door to get you moving.
You will be asked to shoot at a target to ensure that you are comfortable with the rifle and that it's accurate.
Targets are positioned usually at a distance of 100 metres.
Donnie will know the best places to walk up to locate your deer depending on wind direction and prevailing conditions.
