Newark Farm, which is still a working farm, was built before 1800.
It faces south and has magnificent views of the valley of the river Nith which is famous for its salmon and trout fishing.
The farmhouse sits a mere stone's throw away from the site of a 13th century monastery, a papal seal clearly marked 1223 was found there in recent years by a visitor with a metal detector.
The seal is now housed in our local museum.

Newark Farm is involved in a project run by the Dumfries & Galloway Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) entitled: 'Linking sustainable farming, tourism and biodiversity'.
The project aims to assist farms offering tourist accommodation throughout Dumfries and Galloway.
Our intention is to increase the enjoyment of a visitors' stay and their understanding of how farming practices help maintain the countryside.
The importance of raising public awareness of farming environments has increased with the introduction of the Access Code and this project is supported financially by Scottish Executive and Scottish Natural Heritage.

As you walk down the track you will notice a bank of scrub to your right.
Species include Hawthorn, Elder, Broom, Dog rose and Blackthorn.
Scrub is very important as the berries provide food for a variety of birds and the trees themselves provide important nesting habitat for birds.
You may see Robin, Blackbird, Chaffinch & Blue Tit in this habitat.
Further down the track to your right is an area of native woodland.
This is dominated by Oak, but there are also lovely mature holly trees.
The woodland will support a wide variety of insects, butterflies, birds and small mammals.

The Newark flock of Berrichons was established in 1991 with the purchase of LJL9623, MPF91007.
YEO92001 and AJN92028 were purchased the following year.
Our first stock tup was CMI91038.
Since then the flock has been closed with only the purchase of stock tups including Rakefoot Commander and Kietle Adonis who were both Carlisle champions.
Another stock tup bought at Carlisle came from the Inkerman flock and although not a Carlisle champion made 1800gns as a shearling.
He came to Newark 2 years later when he was resold at Carlisle, He has left a lot of good sheep.
