Well, it's fair to say we've seen all the seasons since we have opened our outside area, from glorious sunshine to biblical storms but with true spirit, you've wrapped up, weathered the elements and it's been fabulous to see so many of you. The origins of afternoon tea are rumoured to stem all the way back to 1662 although the afternoon tea menu, as we have come to know and love, took a lot longer to develop.
By late 1830s afternoon tea was involving to become a social occasion.
It was around this time, it was the norm to have a long gap between the relatively light "luncheon" served around midday and dinner served around 8PM.
As a result, ladies found themselves becoming hungry during the day and would request light sandwiches, tea and cakes be brought to them in the late afternoon when they would meet to exchange stories and recent news and gradually these kind of afternoon teas became tradition.
