The Pinegrove has a long and storied history in the city of Carlisle. Once known as a 'monk's haven', the building has been operating as a hotel since the 1960s, providing accommodation for those visiting Cumbria or travelling across the border. The main hotel building was built in 1877 for a wealthy wine merchant, and many of its original features, such as the tiled entrance hall and ornate cornices, remain to this day.
One of our favourite features is the beautiful stained-glass window which was added to the first-floor landing in 1893. Later, the Victorian property was owned by the Bishop of Carlisle, where it gained its status as a monk's haven' known as Pencarl House. This name can still be seen engraved into stone by the entrance to the hotel car park. The original Victorian house was extended in the 1980s to create additional bedrooms and space for functions while trying to maintain its period feel.
