The Cottage Family Centre was originally developed by a group of local parents and established in 1987. Its purpose is to provide a family centre, serving Kirkcaldy which caters for the needs of children aged 0-16 years and their families. The Cottage Family Centre adopts a community development approach that puts the needs and aspirations of families and children at the centre of its service development and delivery, and encourages their participation in the management and development of the Centre.
Our centres are located at 29/31 Cawdor Crescent Kirkcaldy KY2 6LH & 34 St Clair Street Kirkcaldy KY1 2QE. Volunteering can be personally rewarding and helps you 'give something back' to your community.

The Cottage Family Centre was established in 1987.
The focus of the work at the Centre is to provide a range of support to those families and individuals within family units who are vulnerable to social exclusion as a result of factors such as poverty, unemployment, poor housing, relationship breakdown, drug and alcohol problems and health related issues.
Following significant efforts in fund raising, the Cottage completed the construction of a purpose built Centre and moved there in 2005.
The Cottage Family Centre is located in the Templehall area of West Kirkcaldy.

The main revenue funding for the Cottage comes from the Fife Council Education and Children's Services to provide services in the Kirkcaldy East and West areas to support families with identified needs and vulnerabilities to enable their children to continue to live at home.
However, the Cottage staff are active in seeking additional funding opportunities that allow them to develop initiatives which complement, support and extend their main services to vulnerable families.
We are also partly funded by Fairer Scotland, The National Lottery Community Fund, R.S MacDonald Charitable Trust, The Northwood Charitable Trust, The Cattanach Charitable Trust, The William Grant Foundation and local business Briggs Marine.

In order to deliver a holistic but focussed service, the Cottage delivers a range of services to families.
However, in addition to these, as stated above, the Cottage operates a range of other initiatives and activities which complement and support their main business functions which are funded separately.
Accommodation/ facilities for supervised contact for parents separated from their children (managed by social work staff).
Accommodation/ facilities for Family Contact (formal court access arrangements - managed by Relationship Scotland).

When adults participate in groupwork, their children can be cared for in the children's service; this also allows the opportunity for work to be undertaken with both parents and children within the family at the same time.
The Family Service provides a range of advice and practical support to adults referred to the Cottage.
As stated above, the referral and assessment process is based on the family unit as a whole and specific, task-centred work with adults is identified as part of this.
The family support programme is aimed at strengthening relationships and supporting families who are or have experienced problems with homelessness, drug & alcohol misuse, domestic violence, etc - building on individual strengths and abilities - to make changes to their lives.

Referrals can be made to the Cottage from the Social Work, NHS, Housing Services, Education Services or other organisations.
Following receipt of a referral, families are advised within 1-3 days that we have received a referral for them.
The management staff analyse the evidence within the referral and allocate the referral to the appropriate Cottage service to allow a registration and assessment meeting to take place with the family within 3 -7 days.
This can be completed either within the family home or within the centre (Urgent referrals would be seen as a priority).
