The Old Forge
Sam & Mabel our shepherds huts and our self catering cottages The Smithy and Wheelwrights have been awakenened from their long slumber. Drink in the vivid greens of Fontmell Down and listen out for the cries of buzzards soaring above. Nestled in the heart of the Cranborne Chase, The Old Forge is the perfect retreat for those looking to appreciate the slower pace of life.

The 18th Century former Smithy and Wheelwrights workshops have been transformed to create charming self-catering cottages with unique appeal. Constantly evolving, recent years have seen the introduction of Sam and Mabel the Shepherd's Huts, embracing the 'glamping' revolution. Sam and Mabel our shepherds huts are kept company in the adjacent paddock by Scrumpy Jack the Donkey, and Jasmine and Lily the Arabian horses.

Tim and Lucy's passion for all things vintage is evident from the moment that you open the car door. In the yard old enamel signs and petrol pumps set the scene of a bygone era and the theme continues inside with a wood burning stove, retro radios, and original fellows as remnants of the wheelwrights workshop displayed on the walls.
Services
The Smithy lies just across the yard from the main house and was the original Blacksmiths forge.
It still retains many of the original features and blacksmiths artefacts and has made a wonderful conversion with views across the village green to Fontmell Down.
It also has its own private sitting area under a Pergola entwined with grapes and honeysuckle.
Accommodation consists of a sitting room/dining room with wood burning stove, steps down to a kitchen and bathroom.
Steps up from the sitting room lead to the galleried double bedroom.
The Wheelwrights is a charming single storey annexe which sleeps 2, with views across the orchard to Compton Down.
Accommodation consists of entrance hall with utility room, sitting room/kitchen dining room with wood burning stove.
The bedroom has a king size bed and a snug room with sofa leading onto a bathroom with bath/shower.
It has its own private sitting area with table and chairs.
We welcome well-behaved dogs in the Wheelwrights at 25 per stay.
Dog bed, bowls and treats provided!
The Wheelwrights has a convenient inside area to dry off your muddy pooch, including a washing machine.
Silas started life as a humble grain silo at Gourd's Farm, just a hop, skip and a jump away from his new abode here at The Old Forge.
With a passion for all things galvanised, I couldn't help but notice that this particular silo appeared to be in retirement on the farm.
The cogs started turning in my mind to come up with a new lease of life for him; an observatory?
Silas spent rather too long sitting without purpose at the top of our field until being winched into position for his transformation to evolve.
Clamber over the stile and hop across the stepping stones to find Mabel patiently waiting for you.
Unlock the gate to your little haven where you can tune into the sounds of Scrumpy Jack and his friends munching buttercups and daisies.
Sit on the recycled veranda bedstead and raise your binoculars before the sun sets to watch the buzzards soaring then snuggle up by the Caledonian Dumpy and immerse yourself in the stories of a Shepherds life.
Fire up the recycled washing machine drum and sizzle your sausages by the light of the silvery moon.
Cast your eyes across the buttercups and you will find Sam the Shepherd's Hut sitting comfortably in the meadow.
The stresses of modern day life are a distant memory here as you gaze across to the scarp slopes of Melbury and Fontmell Down.
A pretty vintage quilt and luxurious sheepskin drape the comfortable 4 by 6 foot bed, which makes the most of the triple aspect views.
Enjoy the dawn chorus whilst you boil the kettle on the stove to make your morning tea.
Sam is well equipped for your arrival with water, stored in a vintage enamel container, with tea and coffee facilities.
