Our disabled holiday cottages were designed by a wheelchair user who understands the problems of accessibility. The access to the cottages is exceptionally good and the purpose-built footpaths make the farm accessible too so that everyone can enjoy the magnificent views. I have been visiting Mellwaters on holidays for over 55 years, and I absolutely love the whole place.
We started off camping, then moved on to a caravan when there was a campsite. I love Bowes and Barnard Castle - so many happy memories. It is amazing what Sally, Phillip and Andrew have done with the cow byre and hayloft - the cottages are beautiful and contain everything you would ever need for the perfect stay. I do hope we manage to get back one day for another relaxing holiday.
Visiting Beamish Museum, Bowes Museum, Durham Cathedral, Auckland Castle, York Minster and the Lake District are some of the destinations within easy reach. We are centrally placed in the North Pennines area of outstanding natural beauty within easy reach of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Durham, or York, making it an ideal holiday destination.

Services
We had always been involved with agriculture on the arable side but going back in time our families have always been livestock farmers either in Scotland or Devon.
When we arrived here there was an old stone built diary/granary which was derelict and it was our son, who had always been in a wheelchair, who asked if he could convert this building into holiday cottages.
Not just any ordinary holiday cottages.
He wanted cottages for both disabled and able bodied people.
Somewhere families and groups could all holiday together.

We are a family who have been working in agriculture for more than 50 years, we moved to East Mellwaters Farm nearly twenty years ago and our son, Andrew who is severely disabled and confined to a wheelchair all his life asked if he could have the derelict old dairy granary to convert into four cottages specifically designed for families like ourselves.
This was the start of Mellwaters Barn Cottages.
East Mellwaters farm is a 345 acres natural grassland commercial farm where we breed sheep, spring is of course one of the most interesting times when we have over 1500 lambs.

Pretty cottage in a great location with the Pennine Way on your doorstep.
The owners were very proactive when communicating with us before arrival and during our stay.
The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable.
I would recommend for a break away in pretty countryside but with enough local towns a short drive away.
Providing holiday cottages that are accessible for everyone is at the heart of what we do.
We ensure that our disabled cottages can be enjoyed by the full family yet are easy to use for all.
